Herb Alpert's "Spirit Totems" - Win $250 CASH!
Alpert Eagle Bronze

By: Alice Krueser

Strolling down Greene Street early one morning in Pasadena, California, on my way to the LA Pottery Show and their they stood! Four magnificent bronze sculptures towering over the plaza's concrete pavers casting shadows from the early morning sun.

It was an omen! Just before leaving for the trip I had conjured up the idea of launching a "Public Sculpture Photo Contest" at AccessoryHut.com and here it was! The photo shoot opportunity of the work of a music icon and artist. A great artist biography to "kick off" the contest was right before my very eyes. The next morning, very early, I strolled back down the street with camera and tripod in hand. Mission accomplished! The "Public Sculpture Photo Contest" is officially under way. Pictured here is Herb Alpert's "Eagle" bronze that measures 54" X 74". You remember Herb Alpert don't you? From the band "Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass!

Below is some information that was posted alongside the sculptures:

A music icon who is world renowned for his extraordinary career, Alpert has worked as a painter since the 1960's and as a sculptor for more than 20 years. His work has been shown in various galleries and museums around the world. Spirit Totems: Herb Alpert Sculpture 1995 - 2005 brings together his recent body of work, Spirit Totems, which was unveiled this past October in New York City's famed Bryant Park and features other sculptures from the past decade. Blenko Glass Company
Blenko

Founded in 1893 by William J. Blenko in Kokomo, IN. He was born in 1853 in London. He worked in London glass houses as early as 13 years & learned about glass formulation. In 1893 he came to America with the intention of starting the first glasshouse that could supply mouth blown (Antique) sheet glass for stained glass windows. At this time, all antique glass was produced in Europe, which is still the case today. He arrived in Kokomo & set up a small shop. William remained in Kokomo until 1903, when economics in America forced the factory to close. Since the studios were owned by former Europeans, they had a natural bias in favor of European glass. Later, in 1909 he again started a factory in Point Marion, PA, and later Clarksburg, WV - both failed. A letter indicates he was working in Bellaire, OH in 1919 at an unknown glass factory for $40 a week. He was offered a job at Tiffany's in New York for $50 a week and he apparently took this job. Finally in 1921, he moved to Milton, WV, because of the natural gas price; he was now 67 years old, an age when most people retire. Working by himself, he blew the glass cylinders, flattened them into sheets & then went on the road in his Model T car to sell them. The original name of the company was Eureka Glass Company because William J. Blenko spent years trying to find a ruby red sheet glass that would not change colors when painted and fired. When he developed this color, he threw his arms in the air, & said "Eureka, I've found it!" Hence, the name Eureka. In 1923, his 26 year-old son William H. Blenko Sr., with wife Marion & two-year-old son William Jr. joined him in Milton. William Sr. died in 1969. William H. Blenko, Jr. became the 3rd generation to join the family business of glass making. By 1969 Bill Jr. was appointed President of the company. In 1976, Richard Deakin Blenko, son of William Jr. joined the business, becoming the fourth generation to work in the family business.
