Crowned "The Jewel of the Desert" at the Grand Opening Gala on February 23, 1929, the Arizona Biltmore began as the vision of two brothers, Charles and Warren McArthur. Albert Chase McArthur, the architect of record, invited Frank Lloyd Wright to serve as a consultant on the construction. Albert was a former apprentice to Mr. Wright, and closely followed his mentor's design philosophy. Pictured above is Frank Lloyd Wright's art glass design of "Saguaro Forms & Cactus Flowers" installed in the lobby.

"Evangeline"
This beauty of the bayou evolved from Longfellow's epic poem ending her long search for her beloved Gabriel in St. Martinville, Louisiana. In 1929 one of the last silent movies to be made took place in St. Martinville. The director of the film was so impressed with the hospitality of the people in the area that he had the statue erected and donated to show appreciation for which the whole town showed.
The plaque on the monument reads: Evangeline, the prototype of the Acadian maiden, was immortalized by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in his epic poem of the same. The monument was donated by Delores Delrio after she starred in the motion picture production of Evangeline which was filmed in the area in 1929. The statue was sculpted by Marcelle Rebecchini, kept at the Daprato Studios in Chicago, Illinois and dedicated by Ms. DelRio in St. Martinville on April 19, 1931. Marker placed in 1982 in memory of Leo Bulliard, Sr.
The following words are on a plaque placed at the Evangeline Oak Tree behind the church grounds: Longfellow's poem "Evangeline" immortalized the tragedy of the Acadian exile from Nova Scotia in 1755. This oak marks the legendary meeting of Emmeline Labiche and Louis Arceneaux, the counterparts of Evangeline and Gabriel.

Ted Street, Hollywood Photographer
A Spanish Moderne Landmark
Seating an audience of 1,300, this Spanish Moderne landmark is one of a series of Fox Theatres erected around southern California during Hollywood's heyday. Though it is now in the hands of the Mann Theater Company, (of Mann's Chinese Theater fame), this old Fox is literally and figuratively a beacon of the past. It retains its opulence through the use of marble flooring and rich appointments in the auditorium. It also has a balcony suitable for snuggling, and is occasionally the site of a Hollywood premier. Located at 961 Broxton Avenue, Los Angeles, California. It was designed by P.O. Lewis and built in 1931.
Photos can be purchased directly from photographer, Ted Street. Click on the image for the artist's contact information.

He is famous the world over and I thought I had to go to America at least to see a Warhol exhibition," 25-year-old Finola Horgan from Cork says, looking at Warhol's famous painting of a can of Campbell's soup.

America's Endangered Historic Route 66
Affectionately called "The Mother Road", Route 66 is known for quirky roadside attractions and unique mom-and-pop motels, constructed between the late 1920's and late 1950's and often clad in neon. In recent years, Route 66 motels in hot real estate markets have been torn down at record rates, while in cold real estate markets, motels languish and are being reclaimed by the forces of nature. Pictured above is the Sun N' Sand Motel in Santa Rosa, New Mexico.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is a private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to protecting the irreplaceable. Recipient of the National Humanities Medal, the Trust was founded in 1949 and provides leadership, education, advocacy, and resources to save America's diverse historic places and revitalize communities. Its Washington, DC headquarters staff, six regional offices and 28 historic sites work with the Trust's 270,000 members and thousands of local community groups in all 50 states.
