ART MEDIUM:
Furniture Design
ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
Mixing inspiration from popular urban culture and twenty first century technology, Stuart Melrose embraces avant garde materials and production techniques, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the arena of fine furniture.
ARTIST'S BIOGRAPHY:
Stuart worked as a fabricator and builder before studying static mechanics at college as well as a Foundation in Art. He then progressed to Exeter School of Arts, where he obtained a BA Hons in 3D Design. The degree included the hands on side of making furniture such as fine carpentry, metal working, mould making and finishing techniques. This gave him an excellent grounding in the production of furniture which he built on in his final year by specialising in cutting edge fabrication techniques.
CURRENT WORK:
Currently working on a range of scultural furniture using mostly Corian, Glass and acrylics.
CAREER BACKGROUND:
Since graduating, Stuart has been working as a freelance designer alongside creating his own designs. He has featured at New Designers, 100% Design 'Futures' part of London Design week, Grand Designs Live, Home and Interiors Scotland as well as featuring countless times in the design press worldwide. Stuart has just been highlighted in Channel 4's 4Homes Who Are 2009's Top New Designers?Over the last year we have worked with world renowned architects on projects from Super Sculptures in Japan to small bespoke projects in the UK.
