ARTIST'S STATEMENT:

I approach my work with a commitment to being accessible and evocative, while injecting a sense of joy, executed with exacting craftsmanship. Looking at my work brings a smile to the viewer or a sense of appreciation for the interpretation presented. To me art is fun and an expression of who I am, not a dire pursuit. I see art as a symbiosis between the artist and the patron, a conversation, a partnership. The patron should see a connection between themselves and the work, either as a participant in its design, or reflected in the images created.

ARTIST'S BIOGRAPHY:

Ray was born into a military family moving around the country almost nonstop from his birth until he started school in New Jersey. Ray was always attracted to using his imagination and working with his hands. However growing up in a household that provided limited exposure to the arts Ray was encouraged to pursue a technical career.

Ray was at first attracted to Biomedical Engineering as he saw an opportunity to contribute to people through improved medical care. While in attending engineering school Ray learned to how to weld and machine metals. He was immediately hooked and for a while considered dropping out of engineering and pursuing metalworking. The practical realities of finances and student loans, and the family expectations of "getting a job" put them to rest. The job market in the late 1970's drove Ray to change from Biomedical Engineeing to Fluid and Thermal Sciences.

Since graduating from Case Institute of Technology (Case Western Reserve University) with a degree in Fluid and Thermal Sciences, Ray Miller has been involved in the energy field for over 30 years. During that time Ray has managed the construction, commissioning and overhaul of commercial power generation equipment up to 612 megawatts and up to $80 million. Ray has also been an Adjunct faculty member of the College of Applied Science for over 20 years teaching a wide range of courses including Power Plant Technology, Principles of Welding/Joining, Material Handling Systems, Instrumentation and Controls, and Senior Design Projects. He serves on the Industrial Advisory Boards of the Mechanical Engineering Technology and Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology departments at CAS and has developed new curricula and degree programs.

Ray's love of art has also driven him to lead a parallel life as an award winning sculptor. Ray teaches welded sculpture at the University of Cincinnati and has been commissioned by regional businesses, churches and synagogues for his sculpture. He has particiapted in regional home builder's exhibitions and works closely with the most exclusive interior designers. He maintains a 5400 SF sculpture studio in Norwood, Ohio, serves on the Board of Trustees for the Hamilton, Ohio City of Sculpture, Inc., chairs the Montgomery, Ohio Arts Commission and is a member of the Kennedy Heights Arts Center Artists Guild. As an advocate for public sculpture Ray has been directly responsible for new public sculpture being installed in the region.

CURRENT WORK:

Currently Ray is working on some exciting new projects. One is a large scale atrium mobile for a new elementary school in Hamilton, Ohio, a gateway sculpture design for a large commercial development, and new issue based sculpture for exhibtion in shows on peace and justice.
