ART MEDIUM:
Acrylic Oils Pencil Watercolor
ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
With a passionate and well-crafted line, Pamela Carvajal Drapala paints faces. She depicts the wholeness of a person's being through a careful study of that person's life, as well as his or her facial features. Her paintings portray a dignified ethnicity in her subjects. Before painting a person, she conducts thorough research into the person's country, customs and costume. Through this investigation she accentuates the individuality and fullness of her subjects. Her portraitures are a collection of multi-cultural identities. At times, however, she works completely from intuition, letting her portraitures take shape from her subconscious. In these instances, her work may resemble old acquaintances or lost loved ones. Since childhood in the Southwest, Drapala has studied painting with a concentration in portraiture. As a constant creative spirit, she also enjoys writing poetry and writes short stories. She currently lives and works in the Southwest, where her work has been
sold at auctions in Arizona as well as in New York. Individuals have commissioned her work across the U.S. Her proudest moment as an artist was selling the Farm Workers' Series I on April 6, 2005 to a local farm owner in the Yuma area.

Len and Connie Martin attended my exhibit, "A Gathering of Three" at the Yuma Fine Arts Museum in the summer of 2006. Prior to the exhibit, Len had seen the Farm Workers' Series I. He was impressed and within a few weeks of the exhibition, he and his wife asked if I'd paint their portraiture. Surprisely, the three-month process was an adventure. I learned the difference between a portrait and portraiture. I finally discovered that I had my own art technique and style after all of these years. It was there all along I just couldn't see it. I found that my true calling was painting and that I should have been painting a long time ago.All these realizations came to me later in life, but how many of us find what we like and what we do best? When time travels at a fast pace when you are doing something you like, you will know as I did. And, Len and Connie's portraiture; they loved it!
