ART MEDIUM:

Watercolor on Paper

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:

Images for my paintings come from two sources: from the mundane and from dreams. The images are then transformed into metaphors that reflect explorations in spiritual growth and character development.

For example, paintings easily classified as "representational still life" are also on closer inspection, invitations for the viewer to reconsider the significance of the commonplace, since these images are selected for their inherent lack of pretension. By embracing and elevating the everyday, these images encourage the viewer to not only revisit simple acts such as preparing a meal, washing the dishes, or folding the laundry but also to reframe these simple tasks as life-enhancing rituals. Many of the representational paintings have food as their subject matter, encouraging the viewer to re-evaluate the process of taking-in and self-nurturing.

Images from dreams generally involve mysterious figures flying, or climbing, or falling. The climbing figure is perhaps a universal symbol of the individual struggling to gain perspective, knowledge, or wisdom. The act of painting images from my dreams becomes a struggle for me to explore and extract self-knowledge.

Although I paint in oil as well as watercolor, I am presently intrigued by the technical possibilities inherent in the medium of water and pigment.

BIOGRAPHY/CAREER BACKGROUND:

While working toward a B.A. in English Teacher Education from UH, a B.S. in Nursing from UT, and finally a D.D.S. from UT, she maintained her passion for art, intermittently taking studio courses at University of Houston, the Art League, and the Glassell School.
